A New York Democratic lawmaker is behind a national push that would force gun owners to buy liability insurance or face a $10,000 fine.
The Firearm Risk Protection Act, pushed by Rep. Carolyn Maloney and seven co-sponsors, follows efforts at the state level to create the controversial new kind of insurance for gun owners.
"For too long, gun victims and society at large have borne the brunt of the costs of gun violence," Maloney said in a written statement. "My bill would change that by shifting some of that cost back onto those who own the weapons."
The likelihood, though, of Maloney's bill gaining any traction is slim. Republicans control the House, and even states where Democrats have sizeable majorities have not approved the insurance idea.
Six states -- California, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York and Pennsylvania -- have all introduced gun liability insurance legislation over the past few months. None has produced any results.

Whatever angle they can take to take our guns, that is what they are going to pursue.

I personally think gun insurance is a great idea. We need insurance to drive a vehicle, a deadly weapon, why not guns?

Why do i need insurance? I have guns. I am not using them on anybody or in a way that would be harmful.

Makes sense to me. Some places require insurance if you own a pitbull, so why not gun?

For what purpose? Because some dimwit said "Let's require insurance"?

Let's "require" insurance for everything. That way, we can ensure the existence and wealth of insurance companies. Let's require everyone who owns a bike to get bicycle insurance. If you want to hike on the trail in the woods, you need insurance in case you get lost and require rescuing or get Lyme's disease. Let's require you to buy a policy before taking a dip in the creek. Maybe you should have a policy in case you want to go through the fast food drive through cuz your health care costs will be higher if you eat that crap.

Why don't we all just lay down and die and let Daddy Govt tell us exactly how to live every step of our lives?

I'll oppose gun insurance just as soon as you oppose health insurance and advocate nationalized health care.
After the misery I've been through being tortured by my own body, I'm pretty well tired of a nation that regards gun ownership as a sacred right, but not the ability to receive quality health care to avoid pain, suffering, and death.

Shirina - Exactly what healthcare are you NOT receiving? What is it you want that you can't get? Is there some medical treatment in existence that will cure what you have? For some conditions there aren''t any answers. I suffered a long time with a Chronic Fatigue Syndrome after acquiring Lyme's disease. It lasted for YEARS with concomitant fibromyalgia. I went from doctor to doctor trying to find some answers. Well, there simply are NONE. My only recourse was to live with it. It almost ruined my life. But, that wasn't the fault of the healthcare system or medical community. It was an illness with no treatment. Tincture of time was the only recourse. I am fortunate, my symptoms improved and now i am well. However some people are not so lucky but there is nothing that medicine can do to help.

My health care is extremely limited. I have to use a clinic that, while very good for a clinic ... it's still a clinic with hand-me-down equipment, always short on funds, volunteer doctors coming and going like a revolving door (I have yet to see the same doctor twice), and an inability to perform certain procedures like CAT scans and the like. I'm not even altogether sure they have an X-ray machine. Yet this place is the best place this side of the state. What's more, I can't get ANY kind of pain medication because they won't prescribe scheduled drugs. Because, you know ... if you don't have money, you're somehow more likely to abuse them.
How do I know there are no cures or no relief of my symptoms? How can I know that? Has everything that can be done been done? I doubt that very much. Before I resign myself to a life of misery, I want to know that there really IS nothing else. But the doctors at the clinic are baffled - they can't figure it out, and they don't have the resources to do anything else. No one has told me that there's nothing that can be done, only that they've done all that they're CAPABLE of doing.

And, i am not saying you should resign yourself to a life of misery. I didn't know what treatments were available for your condition. But, if you truly feel that you cannot get the care you need here, then maybe you really should take Welts up on her offer? You should do whatever it is you feel you need to do. I do wish you the best and would hope they can find some answers.

I think to require insurance for gun owners is stupid. Also to whoever made the comment, insurance for owning a pitbull does not happen. Most people have homeowners insurance. That is required by your lending institution. They want to make sure they will get their money back should the house become destroyed by natural disaster or fire. If you bought the home outright, I guess it will then become your choice to have insurance or not. I would get it either way. It just makes sense as it helps you should your home become destroyed. Homeowners insurance also protects you should your dog bite someone. Or should someone slip and fall on your property. OR whatever other reason a person may become injured while on or inside your property. Insurance also protects your items when your house gets destroyed. Well it doesn't protect them, but it will give you money to replace the items. How much depends on what type of insurance you get for personal belongings (or contents as they call them). So if you have homeowners insurance, you have pit bull insurance.
There is no need to require dog insurance as IMO it is discriminatory, as is gun insurance. Your responsible gun owner should not be punished for the few irresponsible gun owners. If they want to protect the people from the irresponsible gun owners than build better gun control laws. Such as stop allowing firearms to be purchased on the black market or in these gun shows, or online. Make it so they can only be purchased at a gun store that will run a background check before you purchase one. That alone will cut down on people buying guns for the purpose to kill another person. I am not against background checks, we have them here. You can take that a step further and require that people take some form of a gun safety course. Such proper storage of gun, and how to protect young children from using those guns. It could be something as simple as requiring trigger locks when purchasing a gun, and proper instructions on how to use them. A trigger lock, or cabinet key can be stored in your wallet or some other location that the child cannot reach. Thus requiring the child to ASK for the key before using the firearm. Hell that alone could reduced many of the school shootings caused by students.
Requiring insurance for the responsible gun owner is not the answer. That's like requiring insurance to own cleats on your shoes to keep you from sliding because someone may use them to injure another person. OR insurance on people who know martial arts and are black belts because they now can kill a person with their own hands if they wanted to.
In other words, where does it end? What insurance will be required next?
Here's another question that needs to be asked . . . what is the first place you call if a stranger enters your house with the intent to cause harm? You got it, 911 which will send the police. What do they carry? GUNS and pistols. So if firearms are so dangerous, why is that the first thing a person turns to when an uninvited stranger enters the home? Whether you own the gun yourself, or you call the police, you are defending with firearms.
There is a right in this to bear arms. It's in our constitution and whether or not people like it, it is there. It should not be punished by requiring additional insurance because people cannot figure a better way to keep the guns out of the hands of people who shouldn't have them. (yes, additional, because if you have homeowners insurance, you are already covered for any damage that may happen by your own guns)

This is not a subject of healthcare. Let's face it the VA hospitals SUCK in this country. Which is sad because our veterans should have the best insurance with the best care, and they simply don't.
Also the poor, those on state aid, and the elderly, those on medicare, also get poor healthcare because our government dictates how much they are willing to spend on it and what type of tests should be run. This means more clinics are turning away these people due to lack of payment.
Those who have insurance and make decent money, still can't afford to get help because the cost is still too high.
The healthcare in this country sucks on many levels but it has nothing to do with guns . . . until you are shot by one.

99.99% of gun owners are law abiding. They don't cause any damage or disturbance with their guns. IF they do, laws apply so apply the laws. To require "insurance" is just more enriching the very corporations you all purport to HATE! Go figure.

99.99% of gun owners are law abiding. They don't cause any damage or disturbance with their guns. IF they do, laws apply so apply the laws. To require "insurance" is just more enriching the very corporations you all purport to HATE! Go figure. Rep. Carolyn Maloney Statement on Death Threats Over Legislation Requiring Gun Owners To Have Insurance Apr 3, 2013Issues: Gun Safety “Yesterday, several death threats were phoned into my New York office in response to news reports about a bill I authored requiring gun owners to have insurance. The calls were fielded by young interns, who were understandably shaken by this experience. “Law enforcement has been notified and they are investigating the calls, and so no further comment from me on the details of the calls would be appropriate at this time “I am proud of my work to help curb gun violence. I strongly support the comprehensive package of gun reforms proposed by the Obama Administration and I have authored two common sense pieces of legislation aimed at keeping our communities safer. One bill would put some teeth in the law against gun trafficking and straw purchases. Another would require that gun owners carry liability insurance, just like car owners, to give innocent victims of gun violence some recourse if they are injured. 100,000 Americans are injured by guns every year. Carrying insurance is the responsible thing to do. “Given all the acts of gun violence we have seen in the past two years, the shootings in Aurora and Newtown, the attack on my friend and colleague Gabby Giffords, I take the threat of more gun violence very seriously. But it is not something that I will allow to stop me from doing my work.” maloney.house.gov/press-release/rep-carolyn-maloney-statement-death-threats-over-legislation-requiring-gun-owners-have
