Cardinals outduel Rangers in Game 1
Nobody plays a hunch like Tony La Russa. Not this October, anyway.
The St. Louis manager once again looked like a genius, especially when Allen Craig pinch-hit for ace Chris Carpenter and delivered a go-ahead single that sent the Cardinals past the Texas Rangers 3-2 on Wednesday night in the World Series opener.
Craig's slicing hit in the sixth inning fell inches in front of sliding right fielder Nelson Cruz. Game 1 was just that tight throughout a cold, damp evening.
''Man, he's tough,'' Craig said of hard-throwing reliever Alexi Ogando. ''He came right at me with fastballs, and I missed the first two. Then that last one I was trying to get the barrel on it, make the defense make a play. Fortunate, kept it fair, and Cruz made a great attempt on that. It was a great play all-around.''

Rangers Rally in 9th
ST. LOUIS - Down to their last three outs, and in danger of dropping into a serious World Series deficit, the Texas Rangers rallied against St. Louis' vaunted bullpen for a 2-1 victory Thursday night.
Josh Hamilton and Michael Young hit sacrifice flies in the ninth inning to give Texas the win.
For the second straight night, Cardinals pinch-hitter Allen Craig greeted reliever Alexi Ogando with a go-ahead single. This time, Craig did it the seventh. In Game 1, his hit in the sixth sent the Cards to a 3-2 win.
The Rangers, however, were not done quite yet. Now, after a travel day, they will host Game 3 on Saturday night. Matt Harrison is set to start for the Rangers against Kyle Lohse.

The Cards blew up just like they have all season. Garcia pitched a great game and deserved the victory but the bullpen was up to it's old tricks and the Rangers played the 9th inning well. 1-1 going into Texas.

Pujols Smashes 3 Homers, Cardinals Take 2-1 Lead
Albert Pujols launched three long homers, drove in six runs and finished with five hits — tying Series records with each accomplishment — as the St. Louis Cardinals romped past the Texas Rangers 16-7 on Saturday night for a 2-1 edge. Pujols began the game hoping to shake his slump and maybe get a hit.
He did that, and a whole lot more: He produced the defining game of his monster career, and perhaps the greatest hitting performance in World Series history.
"Just pretty special," he said.
The three-time NL MVP matched Babe Ruth and Reggie Jackson for the most home runs in a game, connecting on fastballs from three different pitchers. Pujols added two singles and set a Series mark with 14 total bases.

Rangers even World Series with a pitching gem
Derek Holland shuts down the Cardinals for 8 1/3 innings in a 4-0 victory in Game 4.
Reporting from Arlington, Texas -- Ron Washington isn't much for speeches. But he doesn't believe in leaving things unsaid either.
So minutes before sending Ranger starter Derek Holland to the mound Sunday for the most important start of his career, the Texas manager stopped his pitcher in front of the dugout, placed a hand on each shoulder and calmly explained what he had to do to keep his team in the World Series.
Holland clearly he got the message, shutting the St. Louis Cardinals out for 8 1/3 innings in a 4-0 Rangers win in Game 4 of the World Series, evening the best-of-seven playoff at two wins apiece and guaranteeing a return to St. Louis for Game 6.

Having no dog in this fight (phrase attributed to Michael Vick?), I have to find a team to root against. I hate Texas .... but I like the underdog, and the Rangers haven't won the big one yet. So, I'll root for the team that beat the team that beat the Yankees. Go American League ....

Well, the World Series is going to the 7th game. Cards won the 6th game in the 11yth inning with David Freese's walk-off home run.
Twice down to their last strike, the St. Louis Cardinals kept rallying to win one of baseball's greatest thrillers.
David Freese completed a startling night of comebacks with a home run leading off the bottom of the 11th inning to beat Texas 10-9 on Thursday night, and suddenly fans all over got something they have waited forever to see: Game 7 in the World Series.
"Man that was incredible," Freese said. "But we fought back, we made some mistakes early on, but the way the Cardinals and we've all have been playing lately, you expect to come back like this. This is just a good feeling and I'm pumped were playing tomorrow. "Just an incredible feeling, seeing all my teammates at the dish waiting for me."
Freese, the hometown boy who made good, had already written himself into St. Louis lore in Game 6 with a two-strike, two-out, two-run triple in the ninth off Rangers closer Neftali Feliz that made it 7-all.
Next up on Friday night, the first Game 7 in the World Series since the Angels beat San Francisco in 2002.

Might be the most amazing world series game I've ever seen! I was sure the Rangers had it won at 7-4 .... then again when Hamilton hit the 2 run homer. Gotta give the Cards credit for coming back, the home crowd loved it.
Are there any pitchers left for tonite?

I know that's right! I was glad that I stayed up to watch game 6 as it was tempting to give up on the Cards and crash out. But it was well worth losing the sleep!
The party hangover is pretty much over now and we're down a manager and are waiting to see if Pujols bails or stays.

Venezuela is becoming known for its high rate of murders and kidnapping. Previously, several ballplayers have had members of their family kidnapped and in at least one case killed. But for the first time, a couple of days ago a major league ballplayer was kidnapped. Luckily, he was rescued unharmed physically, but he says he was psychologically.
"It was hard for me to think about, if I was going to get out alive"
Kidnapped MLB catcher Wilson Ramos is freed by police commandos in Venezuela; five suspects arrested. The kidnapping ordeal of Washington Nationals catcher Wilson Ramos ended after two days when Venezuelan police commandos swooped in to rescue him in a flurry of gunfire and arrested five alleged abductors. Ramos said he was happy and thankful to be alive, and that the final moments had been hair-raising as police and the kidnappers exchanged heavy fire in the remote mountainous area where he was being held. "The truth is I'm still very nervous, but thanks to God everything turned out well," Ramos told Venezuelan state television, speaking by telephone after arriving at a police station in his hometown of Valencia early Saturday. He thanked the police and National Guard commandos who rescued him, saying "the boys did a great job." Five men were arrested in the kidnapping, including a Colombian "linked to paramilitary groups and to kidnapping groups," Justice Minister Tareck El Aissami said. "I don't know who those people were. I know they're Colombians by their accent," Ramos said. "Three guys grabbed me there in front of my house, they took me to another SUV and from there they took me into the mountains," in central Carabobo state. Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo hailed the news. "We are thrilled with reports that he has been rescued," Rizzo said in a statement. "We greatly appreciate all the prayers and thoughts of all who have joined us in wishing for this conclusion to what has been a nightmarish 48 hours. We are eager to see Wilson and let him know just how many all over the world have been waiting for this news." Ramos had recently returned to his homeland after his rookie year with the Nationals to play during the offseason in the Venezuelan league. Security has increasingly become a concern for Venezuelan players and their families as a wave of kidnappings has hit the wealthy as well as the middle class. Although Ramos is the first major leaguer known to have been kidnapped, relatives of several players have previously been kidnapped for ransom, and in two cases have been killed. Some kidnappings in Venezuela have previously been carried out by highly organized criminal groups that demand ransom. Bodyguards typically shadow major leaguers when they return to their homeland to play in Venezuela's baseball league. Polls consistently say rampant crime is the top worry of Venezuelans. The country has one of the highest murder rates in Latin America, and the vast majority of crimes go unsolved. The number of kidnappings has soared in recent years.
