Truly speaking, I wouldn't either and it would be a big dilemma for me in assisting suicide personally since I hold onto the notion of sanctity of life and I don't view suicide in a positive light.

Which is why a facility like Dignitas is important. The medical staff there do not have a problem with assisted suicide, and it removes the responsibility from family or friends for whom it may be a dilemma. Dignitas also has stringent guidelines for patients being accepted.

Are you trying to tell me they take human lives and that isn't against any law there?

This may be OT, but I don't understand the requirement or need to stay on this planet for any longer than one desires. Who or what is dictating that we must endure and suffer to the bitter end? I'd really like to discuss this. Should I start a new thread?

No. I think this is the perfect place to discuss that.

I think that some of you are assuming that because someone decides to choose suicide, that they really want to end their life. But, i think people are looking more to end their pain be it emotional, physical , or spiritual. And, that we need to look at better ways to treat pain and allow people to be able to function and live the most productive and high quality of life that they can. As for suicide, i have experienced suicide in my own family. And, it leaves a path of devastation and a world of hurt to those left behind. It isn't so simple as just ending a life.

I'd really like to discuss this. Should I start a new thread? It is someone's choice what they want to do with themselves. I am merely commenting about the assisting of suicide for someone. No way, no how unless they were on life support for a long period of time and there was no possible way of them coming out...

I would support an idividuals right to end their life in the manner of their choosing
Im concerned that the safeguards are not in place.
Not all families are supportive...you only have to look around an old peoples ward to see that some of them don't get any visitors. These people are vulnerable.

I don't know what "right" anyone has to end their life. If you want to kill yourself, who is going to stop you? There are lots of very effective ways to do so. So, i don't think 'rights" have anything to do with this at all. It isn't like you are going to get fined or put in jail after you commit suicide.

I am referring to those who are actually dying and in pain and want to leave. Do you not think they should have the option and control over their own lives to make this choice? However, I am still interested in knowing how we came to believe that we each don't have the right to leave whenever we want. Where did this belief that we can't do this come about?

It's a spiritual thing for me, Lone. I don't think it is God's intention for us to take our lives or anyone else's for that matter. I do know that desperate times call for desperate measures but me, I couldn't and wouldn't do it. This is just my belief.

The belief came about that life is a gift from God. And, that man doesn't have the right to end it. Most cultures and religions believe that murder is wrong including self murder.

And, Kervorkian ended a life of someone who was not terminally ill. Could that person have been helped with better pain management, mental health counseling, etc? Now we wont know. And, will those who are less functional feel that they need to die and get out of the way and not be a burden?

My thought is if it's our right, then why is it against the law? Curious, what happens to someone who botches their suicide? Do they get jailed for trying?

Is killing yourself against the law? I don't think so. Helping to kill someone else however is. Big difference. And for those who attempt, usually the mental health system then intervenes to try to help the person sort out what is going on and why.

I believe that taking our lives is like spending a year in school, then spitting in the teacher's face and walking out on the finals. Spiritually, I do know this is not the way to do it, so I guess what I'm upset about is when the law steps in and forbids this act.

The law does not prevent YOU from ending YOUR life.

I had alway heard it was. This was the point of my bitch.
