A man has died after being Tasered by police officers in Cumbria. Police were called to Hartington Street, in Barrow, at 18:30 BST on Tuesday, following reports of a man causing a disturbance. A Taser was used during the arrest of the man, who was in his 20s, and he later complained of feeling unwell. He was taken to hospital, where he died. The incident has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission. A Cumbria Police spokesman said: "Neighbourhood police officers attended the scene and arrested a male on suspicion of causing criminal damage and, during the arrest, a Taser was deployed. The man became unwell following the arrest and was taken to Furness General Hospital by officers. "At around 9pm the man, who was in his 20s and lived locally, was pronounced dead." www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-cumbria-14553613.......................................................................................................... What do you think about the use of Tasers?

It doesn't actually state the taser was the cause of death. I wonder if an autopsy will be performed?
I have no problem with the use of tasers in the appropriate manner. But, some police get over zealous and don't let off the trigger, which yes, could cause death. What bothers me is that the officer isn't or won't be held responsible.

Well I personally think they should be banned, they are on a par with cattle prods.
No one can know how each persons body will react to being zapped, and as the police usually turn out in force on these occasions, do they really need it to aprehend one person?

I agree with Pip. The police are or should be trained to assess any situation and re-act accordingly. The use of the taser was obviously not needed on that occasion.

Wasn't an OAP Tasered by the UK's police recently? Real desperado's are old age pensioner, they can give you a nastie crack with one of those zimmer frames. But were was our bold gendarmes with there tazers during the recent riots, some of our police would make good runners in the next year London olympics. They did more running away from rioters than running at them. I wonder how many dropped their baton.

We live in an age of violent knife crime and terrorism....I think the quicker a situation is brought under control the better all round.
However Im not too keen on shoplifting grannies or children being tasered.... so only under special circumstances.

The trouble with UK police is any power given to them, no matter how slight, automatically leads to abuse.
It's like they're more interested in beating, tazering or killing bystanders than they are criminals.

I was married to a policeman, he is the father of my children.. so have a bit of a different take on this. If he had to go out amid the riots last week and get rocks and bottles thrown at him from a baying mob... I would have been frightened for his safety. There were lots of situations that he was put in that were dangerous and unpredictable...and he was dealing with some of the nastiest criminals in the area on a daily basis.
I would want him to have the facility to get the situation under control quickly and quietly so that as few people as possible got hurt.
I think they are the scapegoats for every situation in society...they either haven't done enough or they have done to much.
To those who can only find fault Id say...You try dealing with violent and out of control criminals on a daily basis and you might change your tune. I think we should listen to those professionals on the ground...and if they think its necessary...so be it.

*I think we should listen to those professionals on the ground...and if they think its necessary...so be it. * Ian Tomlinson with his hands in his pockets when knocked to the ground, and also hit with a baton, was hit by one of these professionals on the ground. All he wanted to do was go home ( which he was not allowed to do) after doing a days work. HE WAS HARMING NO ONE, AND IN NO WAY AT ALL CONNECTED TO THE PROTEST.
Not all policemen and women are like the ones that hit Ian Tomlinson, or tasered the oap. There's good and bad in every profession, even the police force. I feel we should not tar them all with the same brush.

You cannot go round doing your own thing when it suits you ,as some police officers do.
