LANCASTER, Ohio -- Holly Yates started using painkillers in the ninth grade, at parties and hanging out with friends. The pills were everywhere, easy to get and cheap. By the time she was 18, she was abusing oxycodone, Percocet and other pills every day.
Then they stopped being enough.
“My cousin, she was into heroin and I started hanging out with her,” said Yates, a hazel-eyed 20-year-old. “She told me about it, and I was like, ‘I want to try it.’ The first time that I shot it up, it was like, ‘Where has this been all my life?’”
Experts say Yates and others in this town of about 38,000 southeast of Columbus are on the leading edge of a frightening new drug abuse trend – one that is ironically being fueled by a national crackdown on prescription painkillers. While new regulations and law enforcement efforts have significantly reduced the supply of these drugs, they say, those efforts have inadvertently driven many users to another type of opiate that is cheap, powerful and perhaps even more destructive – heroin.

It's probably true, but what do we do, continue to hand out pain pills like candy?

Of course not. But, I don't see where there's a lot that can be done. Unfortunately, I don't see this or any other country becoming drug free . . . ever.

wonder why so many drinkers need to get drunk to escape too....but it's "legal" so it's overlooked & excused.

MADD might disagree with you on that.

You brought up the need to "mentally escape" so what about drinkers? They come home and throw back a few beers or some wine. Other than the legal aspect, how is that any different than the typical pot smoker?

I don't get the whole need to mentally escape. Life is pretty damn good and it's surely a beautiful world. Why escape it. It's all gonna be there when ya crash back to reality.

I could never understand a need to escape either. I have always been so high on life, I can't contain myself. ;D Must be the Serotonin I smoke.

what qualifies as "abuse"? more than 1 beer and more than 1 joint?

Abuse being that it rules your life, or you are hooked on it.. IMO.. that's abuse.

I didn't say anything about recreational use.. I said abuse.
Abuse being that you are controlled by it.. your thoughts are wrapped around it.. you are out of control..you..your every day depends on it.. you think about it all the time.. you can't wait for that drink or that high.. these things being abuse. such as an alcoholic or drug addict
