She says she was brought up to be the fastest driver, not the fastest girl.
On Sunday, none of the boys was faster than the girl.
Danica Patrick became the first woman to win the pole position for the Daytona 500, considered the Super Bowl of NASCAR, posting a lap of 196.434 mph Sunday.
In doing so, she also became the first woman to win a pole at any NASCAR top-division race, racking up another milestone in her barrier-breaking career.
"I've heard stories about a kid, a boy or a girl, saying, 'But mommy, daddy. That's a girl that's out there racing.' And then they can have that conversation to say that, 'You can do anything you want to do, and gender doesn't matter.' Your passion is what matters. And that's cool," Patrick told CNN's Don Lemon on Sunday.

Like her or not, but this is HUGE for the sport & Nascar. She's so well known outside of Nascar that this is going to bring massive attention & publicity to Nascar from sources that normally barely mention racing. It's also a great inspiration for little girls. Jeff Gordon said his daughter, Ella, asked to get a pic with Danica afterwards & told Gordon that she didn't know that girls could be racers too. There's been a "girl" baby boom in Nascar over the past few years & yesterday several drivers talked about one day their little girls will be out there racing for the wins. Followed quickly by their wives saying "I don't think so"...lol
One day in the future we could have Ella Gordon, Gennieve Johnson, Brooklyn or Ashlyn Newman, and even a Hazel McMurray out on the track.
and the best part of the whole thing? We'll be bombarded with Danica coverage over the next week, but we won't have to hear about how she's dating Ricky Stenhouse Jr 100X's.
Oh and for the record, I don't think Danica will make it thru her Duel on Thursday, if she wrecks her car, she'll still technically have the pole, but she won't start from the front next Sunday. She's in Duel 1 which is STACKED with the best drivers. My prediction is IF she makes it thru her Duel in one piece & starts on the pole, she'll wreck early in the 500. If she wrecks in her Duel and starts in the back, I think she'll make it thru the whole race.
For non Nascar fans, Daytona 500 is the only race that has a really screwed up qualifying. All cars run a qualifying lap (yesterday), but only positions 1 and 2 are set. This Thursday there are 2 "Duel" races. Odds in first race, evens in second. The finishing order in the two Duels determine the rest of the line up for the 500. If you wreck your car in your Duel and have to go to a backup car, you start in the back.

Oh and the current running joke is the chicken who crossed the road thanks Danica for becoming the #1 joke with "Danica on the pole".

It was also 12 years ago today, that Nascar lost its best, Dale Earnhardt Sr. The Man In Black....The Intimidator
Next year we'll have the return of the #3 car from Richard Childress Racing with RC's grandson Austin Dillion driving it.
