Parents in the UK feel powerless before the consumer pressures on their children, suggests international research into family life.
The study by Unicef, comparing families in the UK, Sweden and Spain, found UK parents buying high status brands to "protect" their children from bullying.
Parents in the UK struggled to spend enough time with their children.
The report also found parents in Sweden and Spain found it easier to "set clear boundaries for their children".
The study follows a Unicef report from 2007, which ranked the UK in bottom place out of 21 developed countries for the wellbeing of children. www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-14898614........................................................................................................... Do you buy your children branded makes even though you cant afford it?

This is half the problem.... that's why I believe in school uniforms then all pupils are dressed the same taking away the...mine is better than yours syndrome. Parents should be more forceful and not succumb to blackmail and bribery by the more well off family's, The kids of today seem to be mini me fashion queens

Why do parents even get involved in the "my childs better than your child because they have £100 high impact trainers on.. and yours dont"
even when there is no food on the table and they live in a rabbit hutch.
Its such detestable pretentious nonsense that only benefits the consumer markets.
It was much worse in the last decade when my kids were at primary......People had to borrow plumes of brand names... from somebodies expensive marketing campaign. The shoes and clothing were nowhere near the quality of the asking price.. so they were being made complete fools of.
I was glad of the rise of Primark and the cheaper shops.....Kids want fashion clothes that they can wear for 3 months then throw away. They do not need to be expensive, only fashionable. It was like the market suddenly started to see sense.

This has been going on for a long time. I imagine it goes from fever pitch to fever pitch though.
No, I wouldn’t. Rather I’d explain to them, perhaps by way of a colourful puppet show, the nature of consumer slavery.

I used to go out with a guy who had a £600 divers watch that was waterproof at 30 fathoms.
Why?...he wasn't a diver.... never even went swimming. He could keep it on in the shower I could never understand why he paid all that money for something he couldn't use.
Why do kids need expensive high impact trainers for kicking about in?......They aren't road running a marathon..... Ive even seen trainers on babies who are not yet walking. Trainers for kids need to be cheap and cheerful so they can be replaced regularly or they just look scruffy.
I sometimes think its a bit like the emporers new clothes and some parents need a wake up call. This fad for displaying materialism that you don't have.... is completely pointless.

Actually, when it comes to expenses and footwear then shoes/boots have become expensive - branded or not. Maybe ISA can shed some light on male footwear because male footwear I believe is slightly expensive than female footwear.

Yes I've seen that too, Spell. Status symbols. The status symbol mentality is caused by rabid egotism, imo.
Same reason. The penalties for low status are even harsher for children in schools than they are for adults, relatively speaking.

Its all a far cry from the days when you waited for the men to come and re-tar the road, to gain new soles for your "hand me down" hobnail boots.

When it comes to branded boots/shoes/trainers, it's males that are mostly a target of it than females. Same with the watches. I think gender does come into role...I'm not saying females aren't into branded wear but from what I've seen, one gender is more likely to be affected than the other.
