We all know it's important for schools to have rules in place. Especially as they teach kids how to take responsibility for themselves, ready for life
outside of the classroom.
Yet one school has caused a storm with parents over plans to exclude children if they forget to bring basic stationery to class.
Millfield High School in Thornton, Lancashire sent out a text detailing a 'three-strike' rule that could see pupils being temporarily excluded. And the
policy has been branded 'a joke' by some parents.
If students forget equipment twice in a week - including pencils, rulers and pens - they will receive a '90 minutes headteacher's detention,' according
to the text.
And any pupils who forget stationery three times in a week will receive a 'fixed term exclusion.' Bit harsh?
One dad, Darren Worthington, was furious when he received the text over his daughter coming to class with a broken ruler.
The text read:
‘Your child has attended school today without correct equipment.
‘As per the letter sent before half term, students are expected to arrive with 2x pens, a pencil and a ruler all in their pencil case.
‘They should also ensure they have their timetable. Students who forget their equipment twice in a week will be given a 90 minutes Headteacher’s detention.
‘Failure to bring equipment three times in a week will result in a fixed-term exclusion.’
In response to the message, the dad posted on Facebook:
'Surely this has to be some form of joke.
‘God forbid your child loses a pen, breaks a pencil or snaps a ruler. Possible exclusion! How is this helping the children to learn? Unbelievable.
‘I think a fixed-term exclusion is a bit excessive.'
His post has had more than 800 comments with some defending the school.
Headteacher Nicola Regan told the Blackpool Gazette:
'It’s important that students arrive at school with the basic equipment they need for a day of learning.
'This also helps to prepare them for the responsibilities of life after school, and ensures that lessons are not disrupted as staff spend time providing
equipment for a small number of students who have forgotten theirs.'
According to the headteacher, parents and guardians had signed a home-school agreement to always send their kids to school with the right stationery when
pupils first joined the school.
They also reportedly offered to buy equipment for any child whose family was struggling financially.
