While Pennsylvania Attorney General Linda Kelly says that her office won't file charges against Joe Paterno for not reporting the alleged child sexual abuse by former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky, the 84-year-old coach could eventually face criminal charges for perjury, obstruction of justice and violating the state's Child Protective Services Law. Paterno could also become a defendant in civil lawsuits filed by Sandusky's alleged victims. Those lawsuits could allege that Paterno negligently failed to prevent a third party with whom he had a supervisory relationship (Sandusky) from committing abuse.
Perjury and Obstruction of Justice
Under Pennsylvania law, as in other jurisdictions, perjury refers to knowingly lying while under oath. Obstruction of justice describes interference with the administration of justice, such as by concealing evidence or delaying or frustrating a criminal investigation.

He should have followed up reports to him about what happened in the team shower to make sure immediate action was taken against the coach. For God's sake...children were being abused!! Doesn't Joe have GRANDCHILDREN? How would he feel if it were one of them being sodomized???

Penn State Board of Trustees has just announced minutes ago that he will NOT be allowed to finish the season! He's done as of immediately!
The Board also accepted the resignation of the President of the school.

No doubt he should have done more but pillorying an 84 year old guy for what he neglected to do is a bit harsh. There will be a lot of things that Joe Paterno will lose because of this. His reputation is shattered after 6 decades of effort. The Big Ten trophy that bears his name will probably change. His winning record now is meaningless and the shadow of this scandal will always be obscuring his name in history. That's enough.
Nail the other guys who were in charge of this coverup and willingly decided to let it continue by their failure to act.

I respectfully disagree. As much as I respect him as a coach, there is no excuse for allowing sexual abuse against minors to be swept under the rug. He should have known better! He had to have known that his reputation would be on the line if he ignored this. He is supposed to be of good character and a role model to young college athletes that he himself coaches! Just like Tiger Woods, Brett Favre and others in the sports world who have behaved badly, there needs to be consequences.

I am sure Joe is agonizing over being let go, but he isn't suffering and never will suffer NEAR the agony of those young boys who were abused!
Joe isn't the VICTIM here...those boys are!!

I stand by what I said above. He is a great, beloved coach, but he did those poor, innocent children wrong by not taking care of things from the get-go. Like I said, the young boys are the VICTIMS here. This isn't about FOOTBALL!  Those boys will be negatively impacted the rest of their lives, but Penn State's football team will go on (a bit tarnished though). |
