I've got more than a hundred bucks just into booze so far. I'm guessing I'll finsih off spending a lot more than I'd care to think about.

I try not to keep track anymore. I don't wanna know. How's that for good planning?

It's a lot like my plan!
I've spent around six hundred on gifts so far, and I'll be shopping again tonight. I have no clue how much the wife has spent or will spend yet.

After i spent $100 on an American Girl doll, the rest of the spending seems absolutely sane and necessary!

Yes, being totally absurd allows one to then rationalize other things as perfectly sensible!! lol

The two kids get cash, which is all they want (I won't say how much). We get them gift cards to their favorite restaurants, etc. as stocking stuffers and a few little inexpensive, but fun things. Mom and Dad get several gifts, but not like they used to due to their circumstances being different this year (more practical gifts this year for them). Hubby is looking for ANOTHER big screen tv, speakers, blue ray. I buy what I need or want...mostly girly stuff...perfume, a few things for the house, whatever...for the most part, I won't buy anything I don't need though. I used to gift my single brother/sister with gift cards, but I am not doing that this year. A few charitable gifts and that's it. I would say we have cut back this year. No unnecessary spending on gifts...more money spent on entertaining family members with food and drink, so that IS their gift as far as I am concerned.

I've spent about £600 in gifts, food and booze this year.
There have been occasions where I have only had £60 to spend...and have had to trawl the sales...and indeed may face those times again...but hey... I not about to go in to debt over it.
I've also collected food parcels and donated some money to an African school just to get things into perspective.
Its not all about materialism.

I agree Spellbound, but I don't even have to try and the money just disappears!

Materialism isn't always a bad thing.

Including my brand new sewer line and basement, I would say $4000 easy

Under $500 when you include gifts for everyone, food, and travel . . it's a bad year.
But then again, it's not about material things. . it's about spending time with your family. I'm lucky to have a family that understands that . . . including the kids.

I think I spent about $300 per grandkid. One big item per kid and the rest clothes for school, etc.

I flat out told my family once - no clothes for Christmas unless I ask for a specific high-dollar item that I would never be bought for me any other time of year. The word "NO!" is used quite a bit otherwise, but Christmas, to me, was the one time I could ask for "bigger" (meaning higher priced) items without the dreaded "NO!"
(I lived in a very rural, very remote small town so, as a teen having to borrow the family car, getting a job myself and earning the money was impossible. Thus, Christmas meant that one special time when I could finally get the "bigger" things I wanted)
So far I've spent over $1k this Christmas. I'm not rolling in money, but when you're single, no kids, and living with two roommates who split the living expenses three ways, even a modest income can generate a surprising amount of disposable income.
