R.I.P. Maeve Binchey, bestl-selling Irish author admired for her novels of Irish life (Light a Penny Candle, Tara Road, Circle of Friends), died at age 72 in Dublin, Ireland after a short illness. She is survived by her husband, the writer Gordon Snell.
Her novels and short stories, which often examined the friction between tradition and modernity in Ireland, sold over 40 million copies and have been translated into 37 languages. Born in the Dublin suburb of Dalkey in 1940, she began her career as a teacher before moving into a distinguished career as a newspaper journalist and writer. Her first novel, Light a Penny Candle, was published in 1982 and became a bestseller. Her last novel, Minding Frankie, was published in 2010. In between were dozens of novels, novellas and collections of short stories, including "The Copper Beech," "Silver Wedding," "Evening Class," and "Heart and Soul." R.I.P. I read a few books written by Maeve Binchey. She was a great author, I remember seeing her on the O.W book club years ago.
