I get sick of cheap people and their whining about nickels and dimes. If you can't afford to go, then stay home. But, no, i am not going to nickel and dime my way there.

Give us an example, Fuzz. Are you talking about stingy people?

Well, a relative wanted to go visit another relative in another state that is 15+ hr drive away from us. I offered to go with her if she wants to go and we could fly. Then, there is the "oh, that is too expensive yada, yada". So, if we can't fly, i am not going to go. I am not up for driving that. If she wants to she can go without me. I am not going to do that to save a few bucks, no thanks. And, i used to be the one to change what i wanted to do for people who didn't want to "spend the money". Well, if you don't want to spend the money, go on your own terms.

Often flying is drastically more expensive than driving somewhere. In the current economy, it can be a big deal to spend huge money on a plane ticket. Also remember that trying to buy a ticket on short notice always costs way more than buying a ticket months in advance. And you said you "offered" to go, not that she asked you to go. So yes, she can go without you.
We can easily drive the 1,000 miles back to Texas for a visit for under $300, while trying to fly 3 of us there would cost over $1,000. To me it's smart to do what costs less & find a way to have fun along the way. We live in a great country with literally 1,000's of things to see along a drive. I'd rather have the time together & the fun experience & memories all while saving money rather than overspend & miss out on a great time with family.
Of course, we have no problem all piling into a car together & making long trips. We have a blast & it's never been a bad experience.

I have found that it is much easier to just announce what i am doing and if someone wants to come along, fine. If not, fine. We have vacationed several times with a couple who are our friends. And, they don't like to spend money to eat out. And, that is OK. They can spend on whatever they choose. We used to go back and forth and then wind up eating at some crap restaurant nobody wanted. Now, when we vacation, DH and i will say "We are going to go eat at X, would you like to join us". Sometimes they do and sometimes they don't. DOesn't mean we aren't flexible. Heck, i am just as happy eating at McD's as i am a 5 star Restaurant. But, on vacay i want to try something new.

Some of it has to do with one's philosophy. For example, if i decide to go to a live event like a concert, sporting event, show, etc, then i generally am going to try to get the best available seats that cost more. For me, i don't go to these kinds of events a lot so with the cost of eating, parking, travel, and all that it seems silly to just settle for the seats in Peanut Heaven. Why not spend a little more and get better seats? And, some of my friends seem to think these events should only cost $5 or something. Sorry, times have changed and prices have gone up. If you want to go, you pay the price and go or stay home. But, i am not going to go and sit in the last row and not be able to see anything to save $50 sorry.

I have frugal tastes when it comes to some things and I have expensive tastes when it comes to only a few things. I like cheap wine, but I LOVE expensive perfume.

I have an array of friends who can and cannot afford some of the extras I enjoy. If I can afford to carry the cost of those who cannot, I will cover their expense. I sometimes challenge one family member who fall into the category of the cannot-s, into saving for an outing and not be totally dependent upon me or anyone else. Then there are those who are just plain 'ole stingy folks who have the money and want to participate in everything and EXPECT others to cover their costs. Not! In my world, I've found both the cans and the cannot-s have the same ability to nickel & dime your nerves to the hilt.

I for one have had enough of subsidizing other people. If you want to go, pay your own way. If not, i will go by myself if need be. I don't mind paying to do things that enrich my life. If they dont' want to, fine.
