I haven't had this problem personally, and I'm lucky enough not to have had a relative with it.
BUT for those who are addicted to either drugs or alcohol and are recovering . . . or still addicted . . . or have family members going through it. . . . I thought I would open a thread so you all can discuss it with people who are there or have been there.

And Beags knows I'm a proud member of the recovery world. Over 10yrs clean through a God of my understanding and the NA (12 step) program. For anyone struggling, there are different ways, just get the help and find something that works for you. Life is so much better without the "monkey" on the back.

Roy is the person I've admired sooooo much and have always told him so. He is an inspiration to those who struggle. I've never had this problem but as I've always said, when I first encountered Roy, I felt such admiration for him. He's a good person; what can I say?

MISTAKES.....your going to make them during the evolution of your soul~ and you ...can count on your soul mates to do the same. Humans are not perfect! We need to stop beating each other up for falling out of alignment with our highest wisdom. Mistakes are our greatest opportunities for growth and healing. We are here to learn from our experiences ~ growing from our current level of consciousness into a more expanded one. Self awareness, self honesty, dedication to our inner work, spiritual growth and the willingness to self transcend is all that's required to make progress. There is always a lesson in every interaction. Self Love, compassion and forgiveness for yourself, as well as, others is absolutely necessary while we ALL undergo the transformation of our lower selves.
"Forgive Them Father, For They Know Not What They Do" (Jesus)

OMGosh...just now noticed this board!! Still finding my way around! Yep...Roy is my brother in recovery...a very good man indeed! I'm coming up on 6 yrs sober next week...Aug. 4th. Freedom from addiction & having been given the ability to help & support others is such a gift & priviledge...a responsibility yet a tremendous blessing!

My brother is a re-covering Alchoholic... It was hell . he also was addicted to cocaine. He lost his family over it.. when he got sober an cleaned up, they re-married. He did go to AA, and other programs.. but.. found God and is doing great. There is hope..for all!

Hiya TR!! God Bless Your Bro!! I've known many who've come into the rooms of AA with no belief or faith in God at all but in time, when the miracle of sobriety comes and the obsession & compulsion to drink is lifted...and then they see others transform from active alcoholism into sober, healthy & productive members of society there's no denying God's existence and hand in it all.

You have a clean slate every day you wake up. You have a chance every single morning to make that change and be the person you want to be. You just have to decide to do it. Decide today's the day. Say it; This is going to be my day. ~Brendon Burchard
Failure seldom stops you. What stops you is the fear of failure. ~Jack Lemmon

Today's thought from Hazelden is:
See who you are. Own who you are. Be who you are. Don't apologize. -- Jerry K.
At some point in our recovery, we need to admit to ourselves and others who we really are. Looking inside and pondering our shortcomings is not the most comfortable thing the program has asked us to do. In the past it's been more comfortable to deny them, to look the other way, to sweep the human error element under the rug.
But the rewards are great. Once we own our shortcomings, once we tell them out loud to another person, we have taken full responsibility for ourselves - who we are, what we are - and how we have acted.
Now we are closer to our Higher Power, who has accepted us all along. Now we can return to the spiritual support that is always available. When we admit who we are to ourselves and others, we are given the gift of self-acceptance and a sense of belonging to the human race.
By opening ourselves this way, we enrich our relationships with our Higher Power, ourselves, and our fellow humans. These relationships bring a new sense of belonging and meaning to our lives.

Wonders ~ Out of every season of grief or suffering, when the hand of God seemed heavy or even unjust, new lessons for living were learned, new resources of courage were uncovered, and that finally, inescapably, the conviction came that God does 'move in a mysterious way His wonders to perform. ~AA Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, p. 105
Thought to Consider ~ Joy is the infallible presence of God.

Wisdom of the Rooms ~ Quote of the Week "Nothing, absolutely nothing happens in God's world by mistake." Lately, things haven't been going my way. Both small things as well as big, scary health related issues have come up that are definitely not what I wanted and can't be good for me. As I climbed up on my pity pot and started collecting even more evidence why and how the world had it in for me, I heard today's quote and things began to shift.
In the past, poor me, poor me soon led to pour me another drink. In recovery, however, I'm able to shift my perception to what God's will is for me, and that almost always leads me to ask how what I'm going through can benefit or help another. No matter how far I've fallen or how rough my road has been, each experience I've had enables me to help another.
As I looked at my current set of challenges through the lens of service, I suddenly felt lighter. I realized I wasn't alone, and that by involving others I could benefit from their experience, strength and hope. I also realized that together we would grow from this experience and we would learn new ways to help others through common difficulties. As I reframed what was going on in my life as opportunities for growth, I realized the wisdom in the saying,
"Nothing, absolutely nothing happens in God's world by mistake."
