What the heck is going on I'm just aghast www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-14450248
Riot police have again been deployed to the streets of London as violence broke out for a third day running. Cars were set on fire in Lewisham and a bus and shop were set ablaze in Peckham. In Hackney, police have sealed off part of Mare Street after youths smashed police car windows. The trouble flared after a man was stopped and searched by police but nothing was found. There were also fears trouble may spread further afield as police in riot gear were deployed in Birmingham city centre after scores of youths rampaged through the shopping area, smashing windows. London's mayor Boris Johnson is cutting short his holiday to return to the city, where more than 200 people have been arrested and 35 officers injured. ..................................................................................................
What can we do?

The rioters are in Ealing now. It feels like the whole country is at war with the police. They haven't got to Chiswick yet, I hope it's all under control soon, it's very frightening to see all the pictures on the news.

Does anybody know what they are rioting about??? Do they even know themselves??? The original cause for dissent has been lost now, but has been used as an excuse for looting and arson. It's what yobs and thugs do best, and they do it regardless of the law or the people who try to live law-abiding lives

hello jonbel
You're right of course, However Ive seen loads of people on TV saying its the fault of the police or we should listen to the disaffected youth......but they are doing it because they think they can get away with it. They have no discipline and first have to pay for what they have done. imo.

Spellbound, in the UK there are many who think the police are to blame for EVERYTHING. At the last demo they were blamed for being too heavy-handed...........they can't win! Many fail to understand that the police are there to protect decent people from yobs such as these. This time though the police are being remarkably restrained as far as I can see.........almost pandering to the mob. We need to bring in the Army, and issue a warning that looters will be shot. That should scare some of them off the streets.

I agree about the police being undermined all the time and maybe they have a fear of litigation.
If it carries on tonight they are thinking about water cannon and rubber bullets.
The army cant come in because the best of them are still in Afghanistan and once engaged it would be very difficult for them to stand down....That way lies marshal law.

I am sorry but there is no common denominator in the reason for the riots apart from the fact that "LETS GO LOOTING" we can steal from shops- we can set light to peoples property if we want and who`s out there to stop us .!I am so fed up with the do-gooders AIRING THEIR VIEWS on the T.V. The politicians just havent got a clue, well if you live outside the area by a million miles--behind 15 ft high walls with CCTV how could they ? As some one pointed out look at the pictures portrayed on the front pages of the newspapers today-they may well be British but they are N O T --ENGLISH e.g. if your born in Scotland your Scottish-Wales your Welsh and so on -Do you get my drift ? WHAT the hell happens to the people that have lost every thing? because a MOB of mindless SCUM decide to take this sort of disgusting behavior and to set light to there homes ?

LAW SPARKED RIOTS By Emily Miller 28/05/2007
80's Brixton (PA) NEW "stop and quiz" proposals carry disturbing echoes of deeply unpopular stop-and search laws that triggered mass riots in the early 1980s.
Known as "Sus", the law allowed police to stop, search and arrest anyone they chose as a crime prevention tactic.
But it was widely believed to have been abused by officers to harass young black men.
On April 2, 1980, police raided the notorious Black and White Cafe in St Pauls, Bristol, sparking the most serious riots on mainland Britain since before the Second World War. And after Met police stopped and searched 943 people - the vast majority black and law-abiding - and arrested only 118 during a blitz on robberies and burglaries in the spring of 1981 trouble flared again in Brixton.

Complaints of harassment and racism soared and riots on the streets left police cars and properties burned out.
In July the same year Toxteth, Liverpool, was gripped by riots. Police were forced to withdraw as 150 buildings on a one-mile stretch of road were torched and 781 officers hurt.
The law was hastily abolished that year. A black guy on T.V. has just quoted the Stop & Search laws which as you can see was abolished--years ago Why get a person to be interviewed on live T.V. who when put into a corner by questioning-then reverts back to out of date laws which were scrapped because they didnt work ??

I Think the only way to put an end to the Rioting- is for Jo public to don hard hats grab a baseball bat and stand behind the Police lines to back them up---lets face it if your outnumbered would you carry on? I think not but it would not be allowed cos its against their HUMAN RIGHTS

Pod, I used to live in South London and the week prior to the Brixton riots almost everyone knew it was going to happen. The rioters had a warehouse in which they had prepared a vast number of petrol bombs...........in readiness for the "spontaneous" uprising. Any excuse and they are ready to loot and destroy............and I make no distinction in who is doing what. There may have been a difference once but those days are long gone. Girls are no better either, in many cases they are worse.

i tend to agreee with you jonbel-- -Violence, drugs, a fatal stabbing and a most unlikely martyr Mark Duggan was part of a gang with links to Jamaica's ruthless 'Yardies' Carried a gun 'for protection' after cousin was stabbed in heart with bottle Dad-of-four was a 'crack cocaine dealer' who ruled with violence and fear Gang linked to murder of PC Keith Blakelock in 1985 Broadwater Farm riots Widow says he 'was not a gangster' and would have 'ran' from police

Mark Duggan was actually under surveillance at the time the mini-cab he was in was stopped. What happened next is still being investigated, as I understand it. Darcus Howe was on TV this morning ranting about what the police had done, which wasn't in the public domain, and seemed to know all about it. So why are the police asking for witnesses to come forward?
Mark Duggan's partner says he "was not a gangster" does she? I wonder where she thought an unemployed man was getting all the money required to support their lifestyle. Certainly not from gainful employment. Does she think we're all stupid?
